My desk at our new home
is,happily, situated in front of a window which looks across the
garden in the summer time ,and,as I now discover a good deal further
when the leaves have fallen. As I write the last few leaves are being
torn from a lovely silver birch, spinning and gleaming like gold coins as the catch
the bright afternoon sun.
Next to the birch a
sycamore, now completely bare seems to scratch at the sky with lichen
covered fingers.
Now I am able to see
the Rectory and much more of the church tower as well as the bare
fields, and beyond the beautiful hill. This change does much to
compensate for the passing of summer and on a day such as this when
the sky is a glorious shade of blue the extra light is most welcome.
During the night the
cat Twiggy woke me several times, jumping on to the bed in search of
someone to stroke her silvery fur. While I was happy to oblige I
eventually became so wide awake that I decided to make myself a mug
of hot chocolate .in the hope that this would lull me back to sleep.
The sky was filled with
stars and, as I do often ,I opened the window the better to view this
marvel. The blast of chilly air which rushed in to the room surprised
me and I quickly grabbed a fleecy robe before returning to the
window with my hot drink to look for old friends among the stars.
By the time I had
closed the window and turned back in to my room it felt cold and the
cat,who has much more sense than I was curled up on my bed with her
tail covering her nose. Following her example I returned to my snug
bed ,pulled the covers up to my own nose and before long I was fast
asleep.
It was daylight when I
woke and with a busy day ahead I was soon in the kitchen making
breakfast. Fresh eggs are truly fresh here so that a boiled egg is a
real pleasure and one I indulge in often.
With breakfast over and
the dishes cleared away I set about making a large fruit cake for Pa
and some date shortbread for my son, with visitors expected tomorrow
it seemed sensible to have the cake tin and the cookie tin filled
with home made treats. By one -o-clock the baking was dome and the
spuds peeled and part boiled for the Dauphin Potato dish to accompany
the roast lamb.
Later, well wrapped up
against the cold I took a buggy ride out of the village and up the
hill behind the house. The views fro here are some of the best for
miles ,it as a favourite spot which I visit often.
I have always loved
these bright ,cold days but today the wind made made me head for home
and the warmth of the fire before long. The pleasure of a real
fire, much missed while we lived in London is a source of great
delight to both human and feline residents and I suspect that as it
becomes colder still many quite afternoons will be spent reading,
chatting and snoozing, after the days chores are done.
Note to self....find
bed socks a.s.a.p!
